The brief was to have a soundtrack that was intrinsically Irish and had to link back to our culture and sense of self today. This piece is heavily sound designed with FX and foley, as well as being accompanied by Bodhrán to make it feel authentically Irish and carry the soundtracks momentum. We wanted a heartbeat to be heart or felt , as the subject deals with the body, blood and DNA. We decided to buy a new handmade Bodhrán from the good people in Muzzikon and played the beat as a heartbeat to build that sound design and weave it with the pulse of a heartbeat that begins at the head of the spot. The Bodhrán takes over and I mixed it with powered, which further informed the rest of the sound design, which is precise, powerful and Irish.
We built layers and layers of fx of rope turning to give the effects of the DNA and worked hard at making every element in the mix stand out, as well as keeping the VO strong and centred too.
We then used synthesisers to create tone and mood with sound designed drones, as can be heard from the beginning and when mixed together with all of the other elements, creates and arresting soundtrack that loops back to the briefs core objective, to show Irishness in our DNA, in our blood.
