PSN outlines the perks of chasing the sunshine southbound for shoots between September and March
As the northern hemisphere gears up for frosty temperatures and shorter days, the southern hemisphere's summer is just getting started. Many producers know the benefits of shooting in the southern hemisphere come September through to March but the countries below the equator each offer their own distinct production benefits.

PSN tap into their global network of partners to share top tips for each country and showcase a favourite project shot in the summers of Africa, Oceania, and South America.

Africa
South Africa

3 Location Benefits:

1. Cost-effective - saving you money with a moderate-cost base, recently weakened currency, and package talent deals
2. Varied and dramatic landscapes - shoot in nearly whatever environment you can think of
3. Superb local crew, special effects artists, and stunt masters - all loved and used by Hollywood

Le Petit Marseillais | Close Up
This film required a warm, sunny Mediterranean summer feeling... in February. With hints of the south of France both visually and architecturally, the Western Cape with its Mediterranean climate and vegetation was deemed the perfect place to shoot at the time, thanks to expert help from PSN South Africa.

Oceania
Australia

3 Location Benefits:

1. Innovative technology - latest tech and skilled operators at your disposal
2. Excellent government and industry support - broad range of facilities, networks, and service providers tailored to the industry
3. Variety of multicultural talent - all ages, genders, and ethnicities ready to help bring your vision to life

Gatorade | Bring The Heat, Nothing Beats Gatorade
Australia was the obvious first choice for this Hoffman Brothers campaign. Filmed in the sweltering Australian summer with support from PSN Australia, the climate bought integral heat to this thirst-quenching spot.

New Zealand

3 Location Benefits:

1. Hassle-free importing - including vehicles, making clunkier shoots a breeze
2. Drone-friendly laws - film your wildest ideas by getting any shot from any angle
3. Unique facilities - take your production to the next level with equipped photo studios, massive sound stages, deep dive tanks, and green screen-walled ocean horizon tank

Feldschlösschen | Generations
German production company Markenfilm and Switzerland's biggest brewery, Feldschlösschen, needed the Swiss Alps in summer — easy for PSN New Zealand to arrange in frigid January.

South America
Argentina

3 Location Benefits:

1. Varying and adaptable locations - distinct, contrasting regions with unique natural and architectural features make for lovely visuals that can be transformed into other cities and countries on a whim.
2. Competitive production costs – local inflation and a new tax on production are counterbalanced by a dramatic drop in the Argentinian peso, keeping shoots reasonably accessible.
3. Experienced local crew and talent - a high-standard shoot can be accomplished here thanks to an international crew of rigorously trained industry professionals, many with upwards of 20 years’ practice.

Caprice des Dieux | La Rencontre
Producers came to Argentina for this adventurous project because they simply needed sun during the northern hemisphere winter. (PSN Argentina’s unique vaquero — or cowboy — horseback rider resources were a plus for authenticity.)

Brazil

3 Location Benefits:

1. Massive savings - local crew, transport, locations, and general production expenses can be 30-50% below the US equivalent.
2. Hugely diverse - fill your cast with people of all nationalities, including German, Arab, African, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, Spanish, Polish, Jewish, and native Indian (Fun Fact: Brazil is also home to the largest Japanese community outside of Japan).
3. Extensive scenery opportunities - bring your vision to life in desert lakes, Amazon forests, modern cities, historical towns, tropical beaches, vast canyons, and much more.

Tena | Designed to Disappear
TENA came to PSN in search of guaranteed sunshine and great casting in the middle of a freezing UK winter. Rio de Janeiro was eventually locked in as the final choice, and, with assistance from PSN Brazil, the spot was shot over three days in various parts of the city in mid-February.

Chile

3 Location Benefits:

1. Accessible locations - find yourself at the city, on the coastline, and in the mountains all within a single day.
2. Varied architecture - a large array of both classic and modern architecture can help enhance your visuals.
3. Flexible talent rates and non-mandatory buyouts - daily talent fees can be tailored to suit agreements from job-to-job, and buyouts are only paid to talent who appear in the final edit - a distinct advantage for projects with a lot of vignettes and talent.

Max | Boost
With help from PSN Chile, producers replicated sunny, surfer-friendly California in Chile for this coffee commercial in order to reduce costs and enjoy warmer weather during the northern hemisphere winter.

Uruguay

3 Location Benefits:

1. Convenient infrastructure - shoot-friendly and service-oriented, with fast permit processing (including drones and street control) and easy movement around the country.
2. Financial oasis - pleasantly affordable compared to surrounding South American countries, where costs are actually rising.
3. Adaptable locations - architecture and design, with rich and varied heritage, can double for other cities and regions - especially those in Europe.

Carlsberg | La Révolution
Ideally, the client wanted to shoot the job in Paris due to their alternative ‘French Revolution’ storyline, but their production schedule had them shooting in the middle of the cold Parisian winter with possible snow and short days. PSN Uruguay helped them find their “Paris” during the southern hemisphere summer in Montevideo, with neoclassical architecture adding a necessary European flair to the film.
