Too often, the conversation about energy leaves homeowners feeling powerless, frustrated and confused, but Freedom Solar Power is here to change that narrative. In Freedom Solar Power’s latest Be Most Powerful campaign, the brand empowers homeowners across America to take control of their energy in a modern take on '80s power ballad spots.
Freedom Solar, a leading provider of solar energy solutions, partnered with creative lab Callen to continue to lead the solar power movement. In a time when energy demand and prices continue to skyrocket, Freedom Solar helps homeowners tap into power that’s meant to be used, not hoarded, without fears or frustrations of blackouts, high seasonal energy bills, or the ever changing electrical grid legislation across many states.
Inspired by the iconic music videos of the '80s, Freedom Solar and Callen created a visual spectacle that pays homage to these power ballads. Elaborate sets on a stage, in-camera effects, and eccentric hair band garb alluded to the classics, while the subject matter of the commercials tackle all too modern problems - like crazy summer heat waves and equally crazy high electricity bills.
With original, composed tracks, the Power Ballads spots feature homeowners Jane and Carl, who are transformed from ordinary people into their most boldly-powerful selves upon ditching old energy, and switching to Freedom Solar. All while escaping summer heat waves. Saving loads of cash on their electricity bills. And tapping into the clean, limitless energy of the sun.
“We’re telling the world about the transformative power of solar through writing and recording unique 80s power ballad songs,” says David Hughes, managing director of Callen. “There is nothing more powerful than an 80s power ballad, that’s what homeowners are scream-singing to themselves in their living rooms anyway, right?”
As people across the globe face the impacts of rising temperatures, Freedom Solar offers a solution to fight off the heat, while combating the larger issue of climate change. In addition to the environmental benefits, research shows the addition of a solar energy system increases the value of a home by 4%.
"Our homeowners are happy when they open their energy bills in the summer," says Sherren Harter, Freedom Solar chief marketing officer. "These ads aren’t our traditional tone, but we wanted to convey the fun and freeing feeling of adding solar power to your home."
An earlier installation of the campaign launched on Earth Day, with the “SolarUmba” activation created by Callen. The agency created a six foot wide solar-powered vacuum that cleaned up trash around Austin in celebration of Earth Day.
