Three Wise
Monkeys’ recently worked with director Luke Losey, musician Paul Hartnoll
(previously one half of Orbital) & producer Ted Thornton on Paul Hartnoll's
solo venture, 8:58. The music video of the first single, The Clock, from the
debut album 8:58 stars actor Cillian Murphy in the lead role. Taking
inspiration from a well-loved children’s television character, Mr Benn, the
promo is set in a dystopian London that takes us on an abstract journey behind
the changing curtain.
Three Wise
Monkeys very own Miles Eve and Brian King were an integral part of the team.
The opening tone-setting sequence was animated by Miles with Brian King grading
and creating the key dance sequence by compositing and re-framing a mix of
stills and moving image of Cillian Murphy’s nine separate characters to build
up an abstracted look. Working with extremely high resolutions & multiple
styles of filmed shots (wide frames, locked off shots, various positions and
plates) the skill is showcased in the creation of a seamless and cinematic
precision look that articulates the crescendo of the promo’s journey.
Shot over
two days across London locations in Barbican, Tottenham & Dalston using a
2.5K and 4K Black Magic by DOP Jonathan Bloom and edited by Ken Eakens. All
animation, post-production, VFX & grade was completed by Three Wise Monkeys
talent.
Carl Grinter says, "I've always been a huge fan of Orbital and of Luke Losey's work and the opportunity to work again with two icons of their field was not only an honour but great fun as well. It's a truly banging tune with a nod to a classic 70's UK kids animation of Mr Benn (that I also grew up with), set in a dystopian world with a subversive underlying message and amazing actor and good person Cillian Murphy in it...who could say no to working on this".
