UNHCR’s "Hope Away from Home" campaign, launched in 2023 to urge governments to uphold their commitments to protect the rights of those forced to flee, takes center stage this Human Rights Day with a powerful new film by award-winning director Leve Kühl.
Titled "Through My Eyes", the film debuts as part of a global activation on December 10, 2024. This initiative aims to deepen understanding of the needs and safeguard the rights of the world’s 123 million displaced individuals. By inviting audiences to experience the world through the perspective of a refugee, the campaign seeks to foster empathy and amplify the urgent need for action as displacement continues to surge worldwide.
"Safety is something we all deserve, yet for so many, it’s decided by nothing more than the place they were born." explained Leve Kühl. "This film aims to portray refugees not as statistics but rather as individuals with hopes, resilience, and talents that can enrich our communities. And while we may never fully understand someone else’s experience, perhaps the first step is trying to see the world through their eyes."
UNHCR's campaign activation builds upon Kühl’s compelling vision, illustrated through a film that invites audiences to experience the world from a unique vantage point. By leveraging the medium of storytelling, it seeks to ignite conversation, invoke compassion, and inspire a change of viewpoint.
"Through this campaign, we aim to remind every one of their shared responsibility to uphold the dignity and rights of those forced to flee," said Dailo Alli, chief of global campaigns and brand at UNHCR. "Understanding begins with listening, and these stories challenge us to see displaced people not as numbers, but as individuals with resilience, hopes, and aspirations."
This campaign underscores the collective responsibility to support displaced individuals while emphasizing the untapped potential they bring to global societies. "Through Amira's eyes—a story that represents countless others—viewers are encouraged to look beyond the label of 'refugee' and recognize her as a vital member of our shared community, where contributions flow both ways.” Kühl concludes.
The film "Through My Eyes" was brought to life with the combined efforts of UPPERFAST as the main production company. It was further supported by The Sweetspot and 27km, showcasing a collaborative dedication to this vital cause.
