AMVBBDO and Brand New School help Starbucks prove that great things really can happen on the oft-loathed Monday with this charming new spot for the UK. In addition to £1.50 Latte promotion offered at Starbucks UK before 11:00 am on Mondays, the spot takes the viewer on a brisk-paced journey through other notable historical Monday moments including the moon landing, Big Ben's first gong, and the first UK cinema viewing.
With the cup as the hero of the story, BNS Creative Director Sean Dougherty flawlessly executed the animation of these fun facts of history in stop-motion, relying solely on a palette of materials that actually exist in Starbucks. Under the creative watch of ECD Jonathan Notaro, the BNS team conceptualized and storyboarded each vignette and then used their incredible team of fabricators to bring the cups to life.
While every object required a detailed approach, shooting the Big Ben sequence was particularly challenging because of the many steps in visualizing it. The graphic of Big Ben needed to lock together on the structure purely from the camera's POV. It took a combination of 2-D design and CG projection mapping, printing each cup out and then reassembling to demonstrate the transition into Big Ben and then the transition into the first public lift.
The result is a lively collection of cup-characters that make even the most cynical Monday morning grump smile. That, and the promise of a complimentary morning latte.
