Soup Film has welcomed new director Manuela Bastian to their roster.

Manuela Bastian was born in 1987 in Munich. After her Abitur certificate she studied Art at the 'Akademie der Bildenden Künste' in Munich from 2009 to 2011. In 2011 she travelled to India and shot the documentary film 'Pink Struggle' about a female self-defence group. From 2012 to 2019, Manuela studied directing at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. During this time she realised several documentaries and short films. Her documentary 'Where to, Miss?' tells the story about a female taxi driver in India. 22-year-old Devki wants to break out of her traditions and dare something unusual: she wants to become a taxi driver. Will she succeed and be able to fight against various instances? Obstacles like her strict father, her torn husband and various conventions stand in her way. Manuela Bastian accompanied the young woman with the iron will on her stubborn path. The documentary won several awards such as the 'Granit - Hofer Documentary Award'. Additionally, it was also listed multiple times as 'Best Female Documentary' and had it‘s cinema release in January 2017. Today, Manuela is working as a freelance director and writer in Berlin and Munich and is currently working on her feature film debut TO SEE A WOMAN.

“For me filmmaking itself is like traveling to unknown places. I start with an idea that I’m excited about, that I want to learn more about. All the thrilling or challenging surprises that come along the way when I start the journey, enrich my perspective on the world, show me new ways of thinking. Once I decided where to go, discovering the unique core of each story that is relatable for many people, is a satisfying process”, Manuela tells about her passion.

“In the centre of my stories mostly one can find women struggling to become themselves against all odds. With a lot of sympathy for my characters I love to tell about their weaknesses, their dreams in life, about the challenges they are facing. Telling those stories with a surrealistic touch is my way of creating images thriving to make the viewers mind starting their own journey. Now I’m looking very much forward starting off with soup-film to find exciting new stories that we can tell together.”

“We are thrilled to win such an outstanding talent for our roster”, Isa Waschke, head of creative talent Soup Film, reports. “She is an incredibly inspiring woman who meets exciting characters and is capable of providing insight into otherwise unknown areas of lives and cultures. We are very much looking forward to working together.”
