Sony/ATV’s Lady Gaga won her first ever Academy Award as 'Shallow' was recognised as Best Original Song.
Taken from the movie A Star Is Born in which she co-stars, it beat songs from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Black Panther, Mary Poppins Returns and RBG to win the category at the 91st annual ceremony held on Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. She performed the song at the event with the film’s co-star and director Bradley Cooper.
Gaga, who was also nominated for Best Actress, had previously received a Best Original Song nomination at the 2016 event for 'Til It Happens To You' from the documentary film The Hunting Ground but lost out on that occasion to the Sony/ATV co-published 'Writing’s On The Wall' from the James Bond movie Spectre.
The Oscar win for 'Shallow' followed it receiving honours at a number of other award ceremonies, including The Golden Globes where it also won Best Original Song.
There were also four wins at Sunday night’s Academy Awards for the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which tells the story of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen whose music is published by Sony/ATV. Rami Malek won Best Actor for his portrayal of Mercury, while the film also received Oscars for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing.
This year’s ceremony opened with a performance by original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor alongside singer Adam Lambert of the band’s classics 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions'.
