Kenneth Sorrento’s sprawling documentary takes a forensic look at past, present and future of the world’s largest island through the eyes off our young Greenlanders, each of whom want to see meaningful change, albeit indifferent directions. With communities divided by debate over Greenland’s enduring connections to the Kingdom of Denmark, and communication made all the more difficult by language barriers, Sorrento presents a snapshot of a people grappling with their identity. Originally set to open CPH:DOX, the film made its premiere in the online iteration of the festival.
On composing the score for 'The Fight For Greenland', Helmersson says: “Kenneth Sorento is a magnificent director who really brought enthusiasm and inspiration into the work with the score on this film. I am proud of being a part of such an important film about identity and the complexity of sovereignty. The timbre of the score is generally quite serene yet powerful. It emphasises the emotional imprint of struggling for your rights to your land and your identity.”
Helmersson’s work includes the score for the hit TV series 'The Bridge' as well as major documentaries including 'On the Inside of a Military Dictatorship' and 'On The President’s Orders'. Most recently, he composed the music for Benjamin Ree’s 'The Painter and the Thief', which won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival 2020.
