Ubisoft’s Steep is an extreme sports video game that drops players in an open world version of the Alps and Alaska where they can snowboard, ski, wingsuit and paraglide through the heights. The massive playground lets players fulfil all kinds of outdoor sports fantasies, offering them endless possibilities to explore, race, navigate freely and pull crazy stunts. Steep pushes players to master some of the world’s most epic mountains by creating their own ride.
To celebrate the launch of this new game, Sid Lee Paris created an 80 second film, featuring a surreal portrayal of the open world’s conception. To emphasise the developers’ achievement in creating such an astonishingly realistic depiction of nature and their incredible attention to detail, the agency decided to go directly to the source. Three of the creators were chosen to tell their story and, through their narration, viewers relive, with them, the birth of every mountain, tree, and lake, as the world springs to life.
Directed by Stephan Wever at Stink with the collaboration of Analog, the film interweaves live, CGI and gameplay footage, and serves as an homage to those behind the scenes, the developers of every square meter within Steep. It’s a testimonial of their ability to recreate intense feelings of vertigo and rushes of adrenaline, and a tribute to their desire to push the emotional authenticity of the “created space” to new heights, and put it in the gamers’ hands. Because each time developers envision a new video game, it’s as though they’re creating a whole new world.
