Thonson grew up, quite literally, with a camera in his hands. His father taught graphic design and photography at Humboldt State University in northwestern California, and at a very young age Sean took advantage of his father's knowledge, and his dark room, to begin a lifelong study of light and composition. His passion led to a degree from Art Center College of Design, and on to a successful career as a cinematographer and a director.
Thonson loves visual storytelling and creating drop-dead gorgeous film. In the last ten years, he has directed spots for virtually every prestigious automaker including BMW, Mercedes and Lexus, as well as for a long list of clients including Gillette, Dow, Sears, and Dove.
“Being both a director of photography and commercial film director, Sean has a fantastic eye for capturing images,” says Derek Sewell, Partner and Executive Producer, Holiday Films. “We are very excited to bring his amazing talents for visual storytelling to our clients.”
This year, Thonson captured the spirit of Canadian adventure in a colossal 16-spot campaign for Travel Alberta titled “Remember to Breathe”. A total of nine spots were shot for winter and seven for summer, with each spot seizing majestic scenic landscapes along the gateway to the Canadian Rockies. A master director of photography, Thonson used signature techniques for these impressive vignettes that showcase all the recreation and splendour that visitors may experience while venturing and exploring Alberta’s alpine mountains and wilderness. Also an avid skier, he perfectly blends elements of his appreciation for nature with his enthusiasm for the outdoors.
Extreme sports and an ongoing exploration of the great outdoors are a big part of his lifestyle. Thonson’s understanding of light and ability to shoot action in nature is earned from experience.
