Radio LBB: The Best of Bob Dylan Covers
As I'm sure many people can relate to, my musical taste was shaped by endless car journeys with my parents listening to home recorded tapes. I have since parted company with many of the artists I was exposed to, (I'm looking at you... Joan Armatrading) but some have stuck; The Drifters, Otis Redding, Sarah Vaughan, Neil Young and The Stones. It is Bob Dylan, however, that shines out for me and has become a huge influence on my life.
As a Dylan fundamentalist, I've spent decades fighting against comments like 'He can't sing', 'He can't play guitar', 'Hasn't recorded anything good since the '70s' (Listen to 'Oh Mercy', 'Good as I Been to You' and 'Time Out of Mind')... So when I spoke to Little Black Book's Paul Cooper about putting a playlist together, I saw this as an opportunity to spread my Dylan propaganda!
This is a list of some of my favourite Dylan covers, which I hope supports my deepest held Dylan belief - namely that he may have recorded or produced some disappointing albums, but has NEVER written a bad song. The commercial success of the final track on the list illustrates this point perfectly.
