Liminal music, you can't see the sounds you hear, so you can imagine them.
Liminal space is an aesthetic that represents empty, large, generally symmetrical spaces and evokes spooky and dreamy feelings. It is based on the concept of Liminality and is defined as transitional areas or thresholds such as corridors and tunnels in architecture. It is an aesthetic that can be frightening but also gives hope and nourishes the artistic perspective like the attraction of opposites. The threshold between horror and nihilism seems chilling when a hospital is empty, but not when it's full.
Liminal Music is a genre of music that takes its name from this aesthetic. The soundtracks of short videos that appear on Instagram and TikTok stories, were made by pioneering musicians such as My Head Is Empty, Oneheart, Hisohkah, Lapalux. These are very short works that, when you hear them, you may say, "I remember this from somewhere."
The story of My Head Is Empty is especially interesting. The musician learns that he has MS at the age of 27 and creates works that reflect his mood. Depressing but hopeful, creepy but familiar. The most important feature of this genre is the characteristic sounds and ambient background that get stuck in your head as soon as you hear it. Liminal Music is heavily influenced by Post Rock, Ambient and Lofi. Mixing and Mastering techniques also contain sounds that feel as if they were recorded on a Tape Recorder.
