I put together this playlist inspired by Jim Legxacy’s upcoming album Black British Music (BBM). I fell in love with rap at 11 years old during one summer holiday at my older cousin’s house flipping through his CDs. I have since lost countless hours analysing lyrics and debating the top five rap albums and artists. Growing up in the UK in the noughties, Grime and Channel U shaped the scene, but US rap still dominated the mainstream. The last couple of years have felt like a sort of renaissance of British rap where there is so much variety of music narrating our stories and experiences, both underground and in the mainstream media. This playlist is a small sample of rap songs that I have had on repeat - some older, some newer that showcase what an exciting time it is for Black British rap music.
