Passion Pictures Melbourne director, David
Colin, explores the idea in his film 'Collective Consciousness', which
screened at TEDXSydney 2017 last Friday.
Synonymous with
knowledge propagation, lateral thinking and boundary pushing, TEDx is a
forum for championing the TED mantra of 'ideas worth spreading'. The
2017 event heralds the move to ICC Sydney (previously the Sydney Opera
House, and Carriageworks before that) to accommodate the biggest (and
always growing) audience to date.

Colin, felt that this year's theme presented an irresistible
opportunity: "The task of creating something around what is essentially
an open brief, with the only constraint being that it needed to fit the
theme of 'unconventional' was too good to pass up! The subject of
collective consciousness is something that I've long been fascinated by,
and TEDx offered the perfect platform upon which to start a

conversation - and one which I'd like to explore further."
Colin's
film explores the question of whether or not collective consciousness,
which has an undeniably positive effect on the individual, can affect
quantifiable changes on society and our surroundings.
Adds Colin:
"I have been incredibly fortunate to study meditation under Jonni
Pollard, the founder of 1 Giant Mind, which was conceived as a vehicle
to facilitate meditation as an easy, everyday practice, cultivating an
awakening in relation to mental and spiritual health and wellbeing. It
felt like a natural and obvious choice for Jonni to become the nucleus
of the film, around which everything else grew."
Producer Sacha
Stewart also had a profoundly personal attachment to the material: "Most
of us have normalised stress to some degree, and it affects our
physical and mental health. Meditation has become a cornerstone of my
life to be enable me to operate my business, while maintaining my health
and wellbeing. What I didn't expect when I first began meditating, was
that it actually increased my productivity, focus, clarity and also my
creative flow."
Says Katie Mackin, executive producer, Passion
Pictures Melbourne: "We were very fortunate to have an amazing
collective of like-minded people involved in the creation of David's
film. It's not often you start a shoot day with a 6am group meditation!
It was also a fantastic opportunity to involve one of our incredibly
talented 'Showcase' directors, Tjoff Koong, to create the 2D animation
used throughout.
