Director Chris Curtis creates authentic & bold launch film

Not To Scale was selected by agency CP+B to create multiple TVC’s and idents for PokerStars new gaming brand BetStars and their game innovation Spin & Bet. ‘Game Changers’ is a passionate and memorable film that touches on historical firsts from the beautiful game of football and amazing moments of skill. Director Chris Curtis and Not To Scale analysed hours of archival football footage to ensure each period in the final film would have a completely authentic look and feel.

Chris used a variety of contemporary designs, colours and compositions to create these visually engaging films while keeping sympathetic to the other BetStars work that runs across various media. The concept, based on vintage soccer posters and ephemera provided a brilliant direction for showing the game changing moments in live action. Shot at Black Island’s largest 150 x 110ft studio over 5 days with 17 football players and a huge astro turf pitch, Chris and Not To Scale combined the football choreography with epic graphics to create an authenticity that could easily pass as original footage. Chris’s creative flourishes shine through with the use of saturated contemporary colours and powerful imagery to tie each moment together into a bold and energetic film that will appeal to the market and make BetStars stand out.

“It was crucial that every game changer sequence we shot had to feel of it’s period - while at the same time contemporary and in my style, so not siding with the obvious Pathe look just because a sequence was, for instance, relating to 1948. This in turn was a really big ask for the wardrobe and art dept, creating over a dozen different strips, each one correct to the team and period.  It took a huge amount of effort, but it was well worth it!” comments Chis Curtis.
