Through its new series of live workshops, the creative production agency continues its mission to combat stereotypes through the power of modern advertising.

Woman and queer-owned creative production agency, Newfangled Studios announces its first live workshop from its 'Nothing About Us, Without Us' series, created to help brands celebrate (not tokenize) under-represented communities during cultural events and celebrated heritage months.

With a focus on Pride planning, the first event titled 'Pride planning for brands: How to avoid tokenism this June' is on the 28th of March 2023 at 1pm EDT. To register, click here.

Having seen first hand how brands often struggle to create work that is both respectful and representative of the LGBTQIA+ community, Newfangled Studios has collaborated with thought leaders from a variety of communities to share valuable dos and don’ts of multicultural marketing. Written by a group of DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging) experts, marketers, and members of the queer community, the event will shed light on the nuances of their culture as it pertains to a campaign and will help brands feel more comfortable and empowered to tell those stories.

“Most clients are aware that there are cultural touch points throughout the year and they have good intentions of celebrating them,” said Macaela VanderMost, founder / ECD of Newfangled Studios. “However, many brands still get it wrong and their well-intentioned efforts can backfire. This series is being created to help brands get it right and feel confident as they try to use advertising to help amplify the voices of underrepresented communities.”

Key topics for the first live event will include:
  • Why Pride campaigns are important to queer folks, allies, and your bottom line
  • Insights into cultural nuances that will help marketers avoid tokenism
  • Actionable steps brands can take to celebrate & support the queer community
  • How not to get called out this Pride!
“I’m excited to join Newfangled Studios in uplifting the importance of representation- not just in front of the camera, but especially behind it,” said Luna Malbroux, founder / CEO of Joy Channel. “The phrase ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’ has origins in the disability justice movement and we’ve titled our campaign after it as a reminder to brands that folks within their community know that community best.”

Newfangled Studios truly believes in the power of advertising to combat stereotypes by amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities, and is echoing the rallying cry used by the disability rights movement in the 1980's to challenge our industry to create campaigns that honour the communities they reflect. It’s simple, but essential: Create Nothing About Us, Without Us.

Nothing About Us, Without Us: This series was created to help serve as a reminder for advertisers that no stories of marginalised people should be told without intentional representation on the creative and strategy teams. The team behind the series includes Macaela VanderMost, founder / ECD of Newfangled Studios; Luna Malbroux, Newfangled Studios DEIB advocate and founder / CEO of Joy Channel; Malcolm London, Newfangled Studios DEIB advocate; and Brii Williams, senior creative strategist at Newfangled Studios.

Future live workshops for the 'Nothing About Us, Without Us' series will align with major cultural moments and celebrated heritage months that have become popular for marketers. These events will be announced soon.
