Four-part docu-series from Think Less and Little Monster Films follows climbers as they navigate the gruelling Climbing World Cup circuit

The North Face and National Geographic has announced its latest series, ‘The Crux: Where Dreams Hang by a Thread’. Step into the vertical world of competitive climbing, where athletes scale new heights both physically and emotionally. This gripping four-part docu-series follows the world's top as they navigate the gruelling Climbing World Cup circuit, all aiming for their Olympic dreams.

“Partnering with Think Less and Little Monsters on the origination of the series The Crux was a powerful collaboration. We saw the opportunity to bring to life a captivating series that gives an inside look into the world of competitive climbing with the goal of extending the sport’s reach. Climbing is at the centre of The North Face brand, and we foundationally understand that in offering access to the sport of climbing, our brand can help foster a love for the sport while supporting its growth.” said Kaki Orr, director, brand narratives.

The series, produced in partnership with The North Face and National Geographic, is directed by Nonuk Walter, Cole Sax, and Phil Hessler. It delves deep into the personal struggles and triumphs of climbers fighting for a chance at Olympic glory.

“This series delves into the intense and competitive world of climbing, capturing a sport that is not only a physical challenge but also a profound medium for personal expression and community building. 'The Crux' explores themes of perseverance, unity, and resilience, providing a detailed examination of the human spirit. It reveals the reasons behind dedicating our lives to pursuits that push our limits, as seen through the eyes of climbers competing on the World Cup Circuit.

“The narrative is enriched with stories of athletes who have committed themselves to the rigorous demands of competitive climbing, each story echoing universal truths about passion, sacrifice, and the pursuit of excellence. The dedication, resolve, and zeal of our international crew, the production teams, The North Face and National Geographic have been incredibly inspiring. I am honoured to work alongside such a talented group.

“It was a privilege to direct a series that not only highlights the competitive spirit of these climbers but also sheds light on the deep, intrinsic values that drive individuals to excel in any field. This character-driven series uncovers profound insights into why we dedicate our lives to our passions.” said director Cole Sax.

“We’re at a time where climbing is becoming one of the fastest growing sports - gyms are popping up everywhere and more and more people are getting into the sport. With the success of films like Free Solo and Sport Climbing’s induction into the Olympics - we felt the time was perfect for a series like this. When we started to develop the show - it was the characters who immediately stole our heart. They are spirited, charismatic, and deeply passionate. Climbing is such a supportive community but as more sponsors and money enter the sport things inherently get competitive - for us that was a very interesting dynamic to explore. Especially on the cusp of the Olympic year and the added pressure that it creates.” said director Phil Hessler.

‘The Crux’ premiered globally on National Geographic on August 23rd.
