Treasurer for AIR (Alliance of Independent Representatives) on trying new things

After spending several years as the executive producer for a nationally respected creative editorial house, Julie started Remedy Reps. She’s also the treasurer for AIR (Alliance of Independent Representatives) and a voice talent on many national spots and on-hold messages. In her free time, Julie enjoys watching collegiate beach volleyball, reading, travelling, playing pickleball and spending time with friends and family. She also loves a good Chardonnay. Julie lives in Dallas, Texas with her family and their dog, Daisy.

One piece of industry wisdom that will always stick with me, especially with my background in post production, is “Never trust a tan editor.” (Thanks Michael O!)

But a piece of wisdom that has been truly helpful is “Try new things.” I grew up hearing this mantra from my parents about all sorts of things: foods, activities, and anything from which I was unfamiliar.

Right out of college, I had a job offer in post-production that would require me to move from Los Angeles to Dallas. My dad said, “Try something new. You’ve got to live somewhere. If you don’t like it, you can move,” and I’ve been in Dallas ever since.

More recently in my career, I credit my fellow rep, mentor and dear friend, Alyson Griffith with inspiring me. Alyson was our rep when I was EP at an editorial house, and nine years ago she encouraged me to try and give repping a shot. She helped me land my first two companies and that launched Remedy Reps. Being an artist’s agent/rep has grown to be one of my favourite things. It’s a lifestyle! I’m so thankful Alyson encouraged me to try something new.

Another time “trying something new” really paid off is my position as board member with AIR (Alliance of Independent Representatives.) AIR was formed at the beginning of the pandemic by founders Veronica Lombardo and Ann Asprodites. It started out as a casual weekly Zoom for reps to navigate the pandemic and help our clients and ourselves. The group evolved to a non-profit 501c6 and volunteers were sought to serve on the Board of Directors. I thought back to my mantra “try new things” and decided to volunteer as the Treasurer. By trying something new I got the opportunity to work with and become dear friends with some great people. We are trying lots of new ideas and platforms in AIR and working to creative positive change within the advertising industry. I’m so thankful I put myself out there!

In my personal life, I’ve shared the “try new things” mantra with my family, especially our daughter who is a freshman in college. When she was little, I’d tell her to “try new things” when there was something she was reluctant to try. I think back to a time when she really wanted to meet a Disney princess but was a little scared. Once I said “Try new things” she did it!

Stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying new things has led to personal growth, career advancement, and opportunities to connect with amazing like-minded individuals. Even princesses!
