Moxie Pictures has signed noted filmmaker Lee Hirsch for his first-ever commercial representation. Hirsch joins Moxie fresh on the heels of his acclaimed documentary, "Bully," an unflinching look at bullying in American schools that spurred lively debate on the subject and the MPAA’s rating system.
Says Moxie president Dan Levinson, “Lee is just flat out a cool guy who did an amazing film that looks great and says a lot. He has the patience of a saint and should flourish in our world.”
A native northeasterner who lived in South Africa for a decade, Hirsch’s first feature doc "Amandla!: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony," chronicling the role music played in South Africa’s struggle with apartheid, won the Audience Award at the ‘02 Sundance Film Festival as well as a News & Documentary Emmy. The filmmaker was also awarded Best Presidential Ad and Best Independent Expenditure at the ’09 Reed Awards for his Local Voices for Obama campaign, has directed films for The History Channel, and music videos for the likes of John Legend and Bongo Maffin.
"Bully," which premiered at the ‘11 Tribeca Film Festival, follows several families grappling with the tragedy they have faced as a result of bullying. Several of the families profiled had lost a child because he or she became fed up with the mental and sometimes-physical abuse experienced on a daily basis. The film was screened for President Obama at The White House moments after he announced support for two anti-bullying bills currently in Congress. Hirsch has also spearheaded The Bully Project: 1 Million Kids, an effort to help sponsors, teachers and other community leaders get one million kids into theaters to see the movie.
