Amarena> “Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.” After all, life's unpredictable twists and turns remind us to savour every moment, don't they?
Amarena> I don’t have a beautiful story about always knowing this was it. When I left my home country for college, I realised my academic journey wasn’t going to be as straightforward as anticipated – I was part of the “undeclared” freshman squad. It wasn't until my junior year that I really connected with the industry, thanks to my first “campaign” as part of a class project. Talk about nerve-wracking yet exciting! I guess I became addicted to that feeling…
Amarena> Recently, I had the honour of working on the newest season of The Black Repertory Theater, a nationally celebrated non-profit theatre company based in St. Louis. The task was quite daunting, I must admit. The Black Rep plays a crucial role in promoting Black representation in the arts and enriching the cultural landscape, not only in St. Louis but beyond.
From developing social media content to designing posters, and creating a beautiful short film, our aim was to shed light on the stories, characters, and complex truths of African Americans, honouring their resilience and strength. Being part of this project was deeply meaningful, and I am immensely proud of the work we crafted.
Amarena> I’m an early riser. And that’s really the only non-negotiable in my daily routine. This time is sacred to me—it's when I feel I have complete control over the pace of time. Whether I'm out for a run, hitting the gym, or just existing with my coffee in bed, this uninterrupted time allows me to set the tone for the day ahead.
Amarena> I feel most powerful when I work with other RTers. Sure, strength comes from within, but there's something unique about the synergy we can create together. Whether we're brainstorming ideas or fully diving into projects, that sense of “team” fuels my motivation and makes me feel unstoppable.
Amarena> The idea of "Freedom to Fail" really hits home for me because it reminds us that as humans and professionals, we're shaped by our failures and the learnings we pick up along the way. If we could all feel comfortable with the idea of failing at work, we would take more risks.
Amarena> My love for DIY projects. I'm a bit of a crafts fanatic, and my Michael’s membership card can attest to that. Whether it's sketching on my iPad or crocheting an outfit, I find immense satisfaction in the process of creating something tangible.
What I love most about these activities is that they transport me into a world where nothing else matters. When I'm fully engaged in these projects, I lose myself in the process, and it's during these moments that I feel most inspired.
Amarena> My creative heroes? Well, they're all around me, really. From the local artists to the big authors who transport us to fantastical worlds, and even to my friends who pour their hearts into their passion projects and jobs – they're the ones who fuel my creative spark. They remind me that creativity isn't just about big names or fancy titles; it's about finding magic and beauty in the mundane. They're the ones who keep me motivated and inspired on my own creative journey.
Amarena> I can only hope for the creative flame to keep burning innovative ideas that continue to expose equality and diversity. Without this creative spirit, our industry risks losing its essence. It's crucial that we continue sharing and celebrating diverse stories because without them, advertising becomes hollow.
Amarena> One small but impactful way I'm pushing the advertising industry forward is by diving into educational initiatives at colleges. Since joining Rodgers Townsend, I've had the chance to share my professional experience at various college events. It's not just about giving them a peek into our industry; it's about sharing insights and advice that I wish I had received when I was in their shoes. Even though I'm still young and not too far removed from my college days, I vividly remember sitting in those seats. That's why I'm motivated to give students the kind of info about advertising I wish I had back then.
These experiences have shown me that the future of advertising rests in the hands of bright minds from diverse backgrounds, just like mine. I’m glad I get to play a role in this process, contributing what I can and learning from those around me every step of the way.
Amarena> Looking back on how far I've come since starting in the industry not too long ago, I realise it's not just about hitting certain milestones or even numbers. To me, impact is measured by the everyday little things: consistently showing up, being a reliable team member, and simply diving into work. The growth and experiences I've gained have been mind-blowing, and they're a testament to the journey we all go through in our careers. So, while my impact may not always be “measurable”, it's something I can definitely feel in myself every day. To me, that's a big win.
Amarena> Stay curious and never stop dreaming it will take you places.
