Updated platform, unveiled with Vince Staples and critic Mikael Wood, includes 500 new songs, multitrack audio, and upgraded tools to provide creatives with high-quality music free-of-charge

Musician and activist Moby has relaunched his free music licensing platform, mobygratis, helping more budget-conscious creators add to the 50,000+ indie films and media projects that have used the platform to-date.

Working with his full-service production company, Little Walnut Productions, Moby has expanded the functionality and resources of mobygratis, making it the most robust iteration yet.

Moby, whose music has appeared in ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Heat’, the ‘James Bond’ franchise and ‘The Crown’, originally launched mobygratis in 2005. Designed to break down financial barriers for creatives by providing high-quality music free-of-charge, it’s also rooted in Moby’s values of compassion and ethical responsibility; the music cannot be used to promote right-wing political causes or animal products.

“Free is a simple concept. mobygratis is just free,” said Moby in conversation with Los Angeles Times critic Mikael Wood and artist Vince Staples at the mobygratis relaunch event at NeueHouse Hollywood last week. “There are no strings, no structure to generate revenue, just music, made available for anyone who wants to create.”

The relaunched mobygratis now offers independent musicians, DJs, filmmakers, choreographers, songwriters, and all other creatives access to 500 brand-new instrumental tracks, with 250 more coming later this year and another 500 slated for 2026. It also gives access to high quality formats, including stereo MP3, stereo WAV, and multitrack WAV, which enables complete customisation and remixing. As well as an improved search function which streamlines finding tracks based on mood and style.

“During the pandemic, I went into my archives and ‘finished’ around 1,500 unreleased songs for mobygratis,” said Moby. “They’re all instrumentals, and my hope is that people can find the music and do whatever they want with it; remix it, sing on it, use it for films, choreography, social posts, whatever. Hopefully, mobygratis is egalitarian chaos at its most open and unregulated. We’ve also included links to some of my favourite charities, so people can pay it forward if they’re moved to.”

mobygratis remains of no commercial benefit to Moby, only evolving to continue supporting creative freedom.
