Maybe you’ve seen a hockey game or two before, but you’ve never seen it from this point of view. Supply&Demand Integrated Director Greg Popp takes us underneath the ice in this spot for Verizon with McGarry Bowen. A hockey superfan gets the best seat in the house in “Frozen Fan,” premiering during the 2012 NHL Annual Winter Classic.
“We took the crew right to the ice for the live action and green screen shots at the Staples Center and Anaheim Ice Rink,” states Popp.
An avid hockey player, Popp even put himself under the ice at a local skating rink in Chicago in his presentation to McGarry Bowen.
“There was a lot of choreography involved in capturing close-ups of real NHL hockey players of the LA Kings and Philadelphia Flyers.”
Popp had a banner year shooting and winning awards for many sports and gaming themed campaigns. The director reunited with his McGarry Bowen teammates from an earlier Verizon spot titled “Quick Dip,” featuring Minnesota Viking Adrian Peterson. Popp also enlisted the VFX pros over at Ring of Fire who were responsible for bringing to life a deer named Steve for 72andSunny’s campaign for Activision’s Cabela Big Game Hunter. The Activision spots feature buddies Brian and Steve, a deer who likes to play a video game where he hunts his own kind. You may recognize the deer’s voice as SNL’s Chris Parnell. Popp completed two campaigns for Head & Shoulders featuring Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers as well as Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins. Popp also worked with tennis pros Venus and Serena Williams and Roger Federer for a Wilson Sporting Goods campaign earlier this year.
