In September, a group of celebrity runners took to the Bonneville Salt flats to discover the distance they could cover under unique conditions with no barriers to hold them back – testing their mental and physical condition in the World’s first run without a finish line. For ASICS the race format was also designed to test the energy saving benefits of their Glideride shoes.
A tight turnaround time for a short teaser followed up by a longer format 10 min film for this worldwide media event (22 runners and 70 global media) made it essential for MSE.TV to be on set for the production.
The salt flats race was covered by ten cameras, generating over 80 hours of race, test facility and interview footage. Alongside Directors Zack & Drea, Toby and his edit assistant Beth, presented their first edit to the agency within 48 hours before they flew home to the UK.

MSE.TV editor, Toby Conway-Hughes: “I was so excited to be asked to edit this film for ASICS. Working alongside a team of DITs took some serious technical planning and computer power to sync and transcode all the rushes by the end of the shoot day. It was a real benefit to watch the race as it happened and the ability to live capture the interviews and make timecoded notes gave me a great head start. Being within earshot of the directors, agency and client also meant I knew exactly what kind of things they were looking for in the edit”.
Back in the UK with slightly more time, MSE.TV continued working on a longer form edit. “The whole experience from planning the technical side of the job, being out on the salt flats, listening to and watching some incredible athletes and working with super talented directors Zack & Drea couldn't have been better and I'm really happy with the films we've made.”
