The "Finland's Most Energy-Wise School" campaign was awarded the fourth-best project in the world’s largest communication competition, the Global SABRE Awards. This is the best placement ever achieved by a Finnish project in the competition's history. The campaign, designed and implemented by Kurio, was created for Caverion and its partners, Microsoft and the City of Oulu. The project, which lasted over a year, aimed to help students across Finland understand energy efficiency in the built environment through Minecraft.
“This was a big, yet highly strategic leap into the unknown. It feels amazing to receive recognition for it – especially when it comes from the top of the world,” commented Caverion's marketing, communications, and customer experience director, Kaisa Korkala. “However, the best results were undoubtedly achieved while the campaign was active, with children immersing themselves and getting excited about energy wisdom in classrooms throughout Finland.”
The campaign brought together three entirely different parties. Caverion provided expertise in energy-efficient construction and building technology. Microsoft helped translate these lessons into the world of Minecraft. The game platform was chosen as an educational environment because it is familiar to nearly all students, and almost every municipality has a licence for its use. Experts in STEAM pedagogy from the City of Oulu ensured that the learning modules fit into the curriculum.
“We enjoy creating boundary-breaking communication that brings together surprising partners,” commented Kurio’s creative director, Jari Lähdevuori. “This massive project would never have seen the light of day without the commitment of all parties from start to finish, through a long journey. Everyone involved found their place in the story and felt it was important. The thanks for this success belong to every single one – and there were more of them in this project than ever before.”
This was the second time Kurio is awarded in the Global SABRE Awards. In 2018, the "Finlandia by Forest Machines" campaign created for Neste and Ponsse was awarded as the 25th best project in the world.
