High Five: WTF Brilliance

ADD TO COLLECTION

Gary John, director at Flying Fish, shares five simply bonkers ads that make you think twice

High Five: WTF Brilliance

How did they get it signed off!? Surreal, silly, insane and weird. If you were reading these scripts off the page in a pitch, they might seem like a copywriter's cry for help, but while these TVCs defy logic and the ideas are straight up mad, on screen they somehow make complete sense...

Skittles - 'Mother's Day'

Agency: DDB Chicago
Production Co: Central Film North
Director: Rodrigo Garcia Saiz

If you have seen this and happily forgotten about it, then apologies for any PTSD I may have triggered. The 'I miss Dad' line makes up for the nausea induced previously.

Setapp - 'Snake'

Agency: Droga5 London
Production: Biscuit Filmworks
Director: Jeff Low

The casting's ssssspot on, and the restrained visual approach perfect for the silliness of the narrative.

Orkin - 'Vacation'

Agency: The Richards Group
Director: Zach Math

It’s ridiculous, but a nice example of absurd surrealism perfectly co-existing in a straight world. Another great line of dialogue with "We could use the boy..."

Turbotax - 'Closet'

Production: Reset Content
Director: Gary Freedman

It’s so dumb, it’s genius.

Miller Lite - 'Evil Beaver'

Agency: Fallon USA
Production: Partizan
Director: Traktor

This one is insanity on a dirt bike. The client pitch would have been just as gripping, I imagine.
