VP / head of sync, creative at Universal Music UK and part of Universal Music’s award-winning music & brand partnership experts Globe, Adam Soffe, picks his favourite ads that have used music to tell a story

Music is such a powerful tool, especially when paired with visuals, so I’ve based my choices on tracks that have been the perfect accompaniment to the visual stories being told...

B&Q - 'Flip'

Agency: Uncommon
Music: David Bowie - 'Sound and Vision'

Uncommon Creative Studios built a 24-ton, six-storey-high rotating set for this B&Q ad - then they flipped it right over to demonstrate how easy it is to change things up. The 'change' storyline revolves around a woman who’s just found out she’s pregnant, while David Bowie’s 'Sound and Vision' provides the soundtrack.

OVO Energy - 'It's Time to Power Your Life Differently'

Music: Slayer - 'Raining Blood'

OVO Energy targeted climate change in this TV ad which shows hundreds of electrical appliances on a deserted beach before shifting the focus to its renewable energy solutions. It’s played out to the powerful track 'Raining Blood' by Slayer, from the 1986 album 'Reign in Blood'.

Burberry - 'Festive'

Music: Gene Kelly - 'Singin’ in the Rain' (Remix)
Production: Riff Raff Films
Post: MPC London
Editorial: Final Cut London

Burberry made a splash a few Christmases ago with a timeless rendition of 'Singin’ in the Rain', infusing the Gene Kelly classic with the brand’s distinctive urban edginess.

Audi R8 - 'Spin'

Music: Dusty Springfield - 'Windmills of Your Mind'

The track from the artist's 1969 album, 'Dusty in Memphis' is the score to Audi’s cinematic 'R8 Spin' ad, which ran under the strap-line "Speed Isn't Everything'.

Levi's - 'Flat Eric'

Music: Mr Oizo - 'Flat Beat'

Mr Orzo’s 'Flat Beat' sold millions of copies and spent two weeks at number one in March 1999 off the back of this spot. The ads were inspired by a music video released by the French electronic musician and filmmaker, Quentin Dupieux, earlier that year. That video, for a track called 'M Seq', starred a glove puppet he had found at a flea market and fell in love with instantly.
