Wunderman Thompson Dubai's head of art shares a little bit of his everyday world with a selection of references that were kept in memory, and other more current ones

I confess that, as a lover of music and cinema, the famous 'lists of the year' have always caused me a certain amount of rejection. Today I'm here at the invitation of dear Hannah Baines from LBB thinking about my references over the years as an advertising executive and art director. I didn't establish a chronological order or theme, I just made a selection of those that somehow marked me. I hope you like them...



Netflix - 'Abstract: The Art of Design'


Everyone who works in any way with visuals should see this series and get to know Paula Scher, the most influential graphic designer in the world. I'm a designer 20 years into my career, and still feel like an imposter everyday. This was inspiring. We are always growing and learning, and I need to be more confident in myself.



Apple - 'iPhone 14: RIP Leon'

Humour and bizarreness are ingredients that always work, and if you manage to find the simplicity to put the two together and tell a story - bingo!



Volkswagen - 'The Force'

I can't believe it's been 12 years since this ad came out! I remember when I saw this ad in the Super Bowl, I had a lot of envy for not having thought of something like that.



Institulo Marielle - 'A voz de Marielle'

Agency: VMLY&R Madrid
Production: Vetor Lab
Sound: DaHouse Audio

This immersive experience designed by Vetor Lab transforms Marielle's face into a portal for her voice, using facial recognition and artificial intelligence to recognise portraits of the activist, such as photographs, graffiti and illustrations. On the website, users point the phone camera at Marielle's face to activate the most emblematic speeches. Each speech has a soundtrack, developed in partnership with the audio producer DaHouse, which used synthesiser technology to instrumentalise the voice of the councillor to create the composition. The project also allows people to record their interactions and share them on social media with the hashtag #AvozDeMarielle.

This ad makes me proud to be in advertising, and that's no mean feat. I love it every time I watch it - the cast, the soundtrack, the direction. Simply brilliant.
