Andrew Kahn and Danielle Toporoff, music supervisors at Good Ear, reflect on some perfect examples of bold choices that succeeded for a variety of different reasons
In a weird world of infinite choices, there's no need to be commonplace. We love an ad that dares to stray from the herd, and a bold soundtrack can be the best way to stand out. We sat down together to talk through our favourites that make you go "Wow!", “What??” and “Why oh God, why?!” all at the same time...
Honda - 'Scooters'
Agency: Wieden + Kennedy
The world deserves more of everything in this cool/creepy ad: sleek scooters, vintage synths, flat-tops, and Grace Jones. We love that this spot wasn't diluted for mass appeal and leaned all the way into Grace’s freaky persona.
Sony Bravia - 'Balls'
Agency: Fallon
Production: MJZ
Director: Nicolai Fugslig
You could've set a hundred different happy-go-lucky songs to these mesmerising visuals, but it was a bold choice to go with such a downright depressing (albeit beautiful) one. Who would have guessed watching a bunch of bouncing balls could make us feel all the feels!?
Apple - 'Amigos'
Agency: TBWA\Media Arts Lab
Production: Wolf & Crow LA
Director: Kevin Stein
Apple’s known for unique and charming ads that also have mass appeal. This spot was a brave curveball from them - and utterly surprising and successful. RIP Takeoff!
Uber Eats - 'Nails'
Agency: Mother London
Production: Biscuit Filmworks UK
Director: Andreas Nilsson
Post: Selected Works
Some may say this smooth, adult contemporary ballad is cheesy. We love it unironically and unabashedly. Lean into the pleasures of late '70s yacht rock now and forever.
Nike - 'Blake & Drain'
Agency: Wieden + Kennedy
Production: Imperial Woodpecker
Director: Stacy Wall
This spot’s a decade old but still feels timeless today. Throwback soul provides a charming soundtrack to the duo’s dynamic, and we love that we were able to mellow out what could have been a more conventional, high energy jock jam.
