We all saw the trend on socials of friends and their pets creating AI avatars of themselves for fun. Throwing up the ethical questions of where your images are being stored and what the future use will be as AI slowly creeps in to our daily lives. Are we paying to give away our identities or contributing to science as it progresses adds to the ever growing data pool.
Baby's music video for the Track 'Theatre' is possibly the first time we've seen a creative application of the brave new trend. It's experimental but IT WORKS!
Directed by Kassandra Powell with creative direction from Dale K, and AI from Justin Hackney, the video sees Baby pay homage to alternative Black culture as they display their “queer rage” in an underground warehouse. As the video builds momentum, we are taken in to a mash up of fierce Choreography as Baby morphs in to AI beings, generated by using a selection of words.
If you think the artist is familiar, that is because, last year, Baby voluntary exited the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race after opening up about their struggles with anxiety to their fellow contestants and the judging panel. Their decision to withdraw from the competition to focus on their mental health was met with praise from viewers.
Baby felt that AI generated imagery is a manifestation of the darker part of themselves. 'I wanted to lean into the messiness of what anxiety feels like and create a visual that represents the internal battles I’ve been through.”
