Climate change is a pressing issue that is increasingly front of mind for clients and especially young people coming into the industry today. Like many businesses we recognise the role we can play in reducing our environmental impact. The old adage of what gets measured gets managed is particularly true with sustainability. We found the best place to start is to first assess your day to day operations to identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and engage in more sustainable practices.
From the outset, when we started the business in 2002, we wanted to change how creative campaigns were produced to improve efficiency and reduce the waste in time, resources and materials due to poorly planned campaigns. So we started with the basics, streamlining our production model to operate leanly and efficiently, saving time and money for our clients. Key to our approach then and today has been our unwavering commitment to supporting local diverse talent and supply chains. We actively seek out local talent, working with local directors, photographers and crews when shooting globally.
It can be challenging to know where to find practical solutions to reduce your environmental footprint, but there are lots of resources and guidance out there. We have joined AdGreen, an industry association seeking to unite the advertising industry to eliminate the negative environmental impacts of production. We track and report our campaigns using AdGreen’s carbon calculator which gives us and our clients better visibility on the sustainability impact.
According to AdGreen’s Annual Review 2022, travel and transport accounted for the most emissions generated as a result of all activities recorded (62.4%) amongst companies surveyed. As an international business that services global clients, and with offices in London and Amsterdam, plane travel is unavoidable. However, we seek to limit the number of flights we take and offset the carbon emissions. Further, on local campaigns we use electric vehicles for our deliveries and transport requirements.
Ultimately, sustainability begins in the office and just like in our homes, every step counts. Simple steps such as using more efficient LED lighting, to turning off computers and lights when not in use not only reduce emissions but also save operating costs. At ANOTHER, we have been a plastic-free company for a number of years and source renewable papers and materials wherever feasible. We are proud to have achieved certification by Carbon Neutral Britain in recognition of our efforts to reduce our carbon emissions.
One step to reduce waste, if you don’t have access to a recycling programme in your office or building, is to speak to your landlord or property manager and other tenants to see what opportunities can be made available. As ultimately, starting a conversation on sustainability with your downstream and upstream supply chain, and especially, clients can be key to progressing your environmental efforts.
