Director Matt Smukler joins Snapper Films for commercial representation in the UK. When asked “Why advertising?”, he responded, “Blending art and commerce is not easy, but when done well, it’s magical. I’m obsessed with doing it well”. His vast success in the arena indicates that he knows exactly how to make that magic.
Matt is a remarkably talented, established commercial director. He has worked on campaigns for the biggest brands in the business, including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and Telekom, to name but a few. He has had his work featured at the Super Bowl, won two silver lions, been nominated for an Emmy, and his debut feature film ‘Wildflower’ premiered at Tiff (Toronto International Film Festival). The list goes on. No doubt, the ingredient to such success is the captivating honesty imbued in all his work. His highly emotive films encourage empathy which (in Snapper’s view) is the fundamental purpose of storytelling.
His debut feature film ‘Wildflower’ will be released on March 17th by Momentum pictures. ‘Wildflower’ is a coming-of-age comedy-drama inspired by a true story. The feature follows Bea, a high school student navigating life with two neurodivergent parents as she seeks an independent life. It is bursting with joy, humour and originality. Matt unearths extraordinary performances from an all-star ensemble, including captivating performances from Jean Smart (Hacks) and Kieran Shipka (Mad Men). When asked what he is most excited about in the UK market, Matt said that it is “The English sense of humour”. He said that “In another life, I happen to know, for a fact, I was English.” We are very excited to welcome Matt to Snapper. We cannot wait to bring the life-affirming force of his films and his brilliant instinct for nuanced comedy into the UK market.
Helen Hadfield said, “Matt is funny, truthful and engaging. These qualities are beautifully reflected in his work. Who doesn’t love a brilliant sense of humour, a vital ingredient for life and advertising especially in these times. He is a must-have addition to our roster of talented storytellers. A brilliant observer of human behaviour, Matt delivers content using every skill in a filmmaker’s arsenal with an exacting precision to fully realise the story’s potential. It is no wonder that his films stay with you. His debut feature film ‘Wildflower’ is a funny and poignant portrayal of what it is to grow up in a neurodivergent family. The film is astonishingly memorable and charmingly relatable.
