Dentsu today announced that Kei Kawamura, a casting director at Dentsu Casting & Entertainment Inc. has received an Emmy award for outstanding casting for her work on FX’s 'Shōgun', a popular drama series distributed worldwide.
Kawamura became the first Japanese person to win a casting award in the drama series category at the 76th Emmy Awards, which are considered the highest accolades of the American television industry, often being referred to as the 'Oscars of American television'. They are presented to work, actors and production staff that have achieved excellence in programs broadcast or distributed within the United States. This year, “Shōgun” won high praise in the drama series category, receiving a total of 26 nominations in 23 categories, including Drama Series, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and Directing. A total of 11 Japanese people were nominated, the most in the history of the awards.
Kawamura, who worked as a casting director for Japanese actors, was in charge of proposing and coordinating actors with the ideal acting abilities for the series, which dramatizes the tumultuous Warring States period of Japanese history. Her outstanding work led to her becoming one of the Japanese Emmy award winners, along with Hiroyuki Sanada (Lead Actor Award), Anna Sawai (Lead Actress Award), and Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira (Supporting Actor Awards), among others.
