Addicted to Wordle? Obsessed with Midjourney? Missing the Hangman of old? Daydreams is all of this - in one web-based game.
What is Daydreams?
A combination of Wordle, Hangman and Midjourney, Daydreams is the first daily game to use AI synthesised images. In essence, it’s a web-based game with AI image-based clues.
Every new day presents a new ‘daydream’ to bring into reality. All players solve the exact same daydreams each day, making it the perfect way to start your day, readying you for the day’s watercooler conversation. An addictive daily game, Daydreams is suitable for anyone and everyone to play.
The daydreams are surreal, conceptual, engaging, magical, abstract amalgamations - visual representations of concepts, places, ideas and objects.
Daydreams leverages Midjourney - a powerful CLIP guided diffusion model and service where people enter prompts into the Midjourney Discord bot and images are generated such as ‘disco astronaut painted by Salvador Dali’ or ‘artistic glass shark sculpture with studio lighting, 3D render’. It really is only limited by people’s imagination.
Each daydream is a prompt that players use to guess from the AI generated images - some days are easy, others harder.
How to play
Players must solve the series of daydreams (AI image clues) by guessing letter by letter. Determine the common elements within the four daydreams to get a clue on what the prompt is. Choose the wrong letter, lose a life - of which you have three.
Come back everyday to build up a streak. Can you build up a super streak where you win day after day with all lives (hearts) intact?
Once the daily daydream is completed, scores can be shared amongst friends, family and colleagues. Compete to get the highest daily streak and bragging rights.
How did we come up with it?
“At T&DA we are always trying to be creative forward thinkers experimenting and adopting new technologies. We find joy in subverting the tech, changing it up and repurposing it into something new,” said Tyrone Estephan, executive director. “After developing a short animation where we took the Midjourney images, applied post FX and neural depth filters to create parallax, we kept thinking about what more we could do with this.”
With the team’s background in game development, especially with the growing trend of gamification, they decided to make a game adopting AI generated imagery.
“The first rough iteration was a Wordle style guessing game where players guessed the whole word, but the images often came out too abstract/obscure so that the complexity was way too difficult,” explains Technical Artist, Sean Simon.
“We then stumbled upon the idea of Hangman, where instead of guessing the entire word, players guess each letter. This meant there were only 26 possible options rather than the vast span of the English vocabulary. When this proved to be extremely addictive on paper, we set to prototyping it properly.”
Who are we?
Daydreams has been developed by the T&DA team, a technology and design agency and industry heavy weight, specialising in interactive real-time AR and VR premium experiences.
T&DA is a collaborative playground for making cool and innovative things. Lead technical artist, Sean Simon undertook the programming, game concept and design, and generated each level and a custom level-designer tool. Creative Director and Technologist, Ray Leung created the design elements and Producer, Tyrone Estephan oversaw production and web development ensuring the entire experience runs smoothly across all devices.
Fun and addictive, Daydreams is accessible and enjoyable to play on all devices while catering to the daily needs of the Wordle crowd to solve puzzles.
