Curate Films has announced the signing of director Simon Evans to its roster.
A good laugh is a mighty good thing, and in harrowing times it is only more healing. When the pandemic first reared its head, many stories brought a gravity and seriousness when exploring the topic, carrying the weight of a frightening unknown. Cue Simon Evans.
Like many creatives, this renowned theatrical director had various projects put on hold with the first lockdown. Unwilling to sit idly by, Evans created, wrote, directed and performed in the now award-winning BBC comedy, Staged. It’s a virtual sitcom starring the marvellous David Tennant and Michael Sheen as they attempt to rehearse via video conference.
Portraying exaggerated versions of themselves, this duo brings a mockery and relatability typically unseen amongst celebrities. It’s a refreshing and hilarious series, providing reassurance that we are all truly in this together.
Simon Evans doles out belly’s of laughter and an impressive cast including Dame Judi Dench and the iconic Samuel L Jackson. His penchant for directing great talents not only elevates the performances, but also shows the quality of his own work.
The world is finally regaining some normalcy, yet Staged retains its relevance. While the series is a product of the pandemic, Evans cleverly manages never to mention it. In many ways habits developed during lockdown have secured into our new normal, with Zoom calls still ever-used. In that way, this series has secured a satisfaction and laughter that should prove timeless.
Simon Evans successes are only mounting and with theatre and television established, it only makes sense that he include features as well. Currently penning the script to his feature film debut, an adaptation of Lawrence Osborne’s novel Hunters in The Dark, will surely prove to be a gripping psychological thriller.
Now happily hosted at Curate Films, Simon Evans’ talents can be found amongst their Directors Roster and the Writer’s Room.
