It's back to the future in the new trailer for the upcoming TMNT retro game produced for Dotemu & Nickelodeon. This is a tribute to the opening sequence from 1987, which remains as a memorable intro today.
Gary Levesque directed this for the fans, with production team WIZZ. He kept in mind the original designs from the mythic show while producing something with new tools in animation.
Director Gary Levesque said: “I think the main challenge was to modernise the turtles while keeping the look and feel of their late '80s versions. It meant a lot of work on the characters which took a little time to get the right mix. From a more technical point of view, we also wanted to use modern techniques of animation in an invisible way to be able to have a more contemporary mise en scene. So we used a lot of 3D for the sets and other elements in order to be able to make camera movements for example, which were less common back then. All while still trying to keep an old school look.
As a personal note, I felt a lot of pressure to make a cool film because I grew up with TMNT! So on the one hand I was comfortable with the universe but also very concerned about paying homage to it as best as possible. Especially with the not-so-easy production conditions during the lockdown with a crew split between Paris, Lyon and London. The same thing happened when I learned that Mike Patton (of Faith No More) was going to do the music! Being a big fan of his work, I had to make sure it was up to par. In the end I'm very happy with it.”
The soundtrack features legendary Mike Patton lending his vocal touch.
