Knucklehead’s Chris Hewitt has directed a beautiful new music video-come-film for A Winged Victory For The Sullen.
The moving, eerie music featured was written by Stars of the Lid founder Adam Witzie and was composed by LA-based Dustin O’Halloran. It was in memory of their good friend Mark Linkous, from Sparklehorse, who sadly took his own life in September 2010.
The idea for the film was generated between Hewitt and BBH creatives Robin Warman and Harry Orton. The Mill produced the butterfly effects in the video.
“We had had the idea of butterflies escaping from a prison for a little while when we started talking with Chris [Hewitt] about working on a personal project together. We both felt that his stunning visual aesthetic would be perfect for the film, so It was great to hear that he liked the concept as much as we did,” said BBH creatives. “Early on it was very clear that this film deserved an incredibly powerful and meaningful piece of music. So it was perhaps serendipitous, that the album we all suggested at the next get together was the newly released ‘A winged victory for the sullen.’”
They followed on to explain the what the film and music really meant: “It was only when we met with the band, that we realised the song had a far deeper, sadder meaning than we could have predicted. ‘Requiem for a Static King’ is not some airy title; it’s a song to honour the death of a dear friend.”
