Social media was awash this past weekend with commentary on Childish Gambino’s latest hit ‘This Is America’. Its video, directed by Doomsday Entertainment’s Hiro Murai, a longtime collaborator of Childish Gambino’s (real name Donald Glover) clocked up 10 million views in just 24 hours after its release.
The film is particularly poignant given the current political and cultural tension plaguing the US right now. In ‘This Is America’, Glover and Murai cast a satirical eye on these issues. It opens on Glover in the midst of an expansive warehouse, bare-chested and dancing before all of a sudden gunning people down. The juxtaposition between the moments of death and joyful dancing are shocking and the internet is full with theories of what everything means. But at its core, This Is America is a beautifully choreographed piece that explores racism, gun violence and police brutality in America right now.
