El Guincho and CANADA team up once again for 'Comix' promo
Five years after the Bombay worldwide phenomenon, El Guincho and CANADA team up once again for Comix, the new single from his upcoming album HiperAsia.
Director CANADA explains: "This video
is quite special to us. El Guincho is not a simple artist and working
with him is always a challenge in CANADA. His music is so playful that
illustrating his sounds and words is always fun. We’ve shared some
history together - very important history to us - and that makes us feel
very close to the project. That’s why we wanted to be involved in the
album also, releasing it from our own record label."
El Guincho's music has always transcended genres of all sort, which is key to understanding the genesis of this video: "Comix
is a complex song, it has many layers and the sources it drinks from
are rich and diverse. The video wants to reflect that generosity of
ideas and mixture of different worlds by trying to make them work
together in a fun way. We listened and received it as a rap song, but
then again, it is not quite that. So we mostly started from there. We
used the imagery of a hip hop video but played with it in our own
unorthodox way."
Pablo Díaz-Reixa shares how the song was conceived and how the collaboration came to be with La Mala: "Comix
started with a beat I sent Maria, Mala Rodriguez, in 2015. It was among
a few other sketches I recorded for her in a folder. I stumbled upon it
that summer and really digged it. I improvised my bars using a sort of
obsolete rhyme structure, trying to fit the lyrics into a rigid scheme
rhyming with the letter "i", it might feel a little uncomfortable in Spanish but it keeps it fresh and a bit cocky too. I sent it to
María and she recorded a great melody on top, very versatile, that
allowed me to modify the harmony and make the song catchier while
keeping the structure weird, something that felt like a radio freestyle,
which is the way I conceived the song in the first place. Soul & tricks."
