Brain Food: 5 Totally Topical Ideas to End Your Week On

Doodle tats, a judgy book, The Brick Bowl, 50 Shades’ mockumentary and Saved By The Bell

Social media feeds this week seemed to be stacked full of two things: The Super Bowl and 50 Shades of bloody Grey. This week’s Brain Food features those two things. But, fear not. It’s not the same old stuff that, let’s be honest, we’ve probably seen enough of now. There’s also a crazily cool book cover that judges you instead of you judging it, a dad holding onto his kids’ childhood memories via some magnificent tattoos, and the ultimate high school reunion. LBB’s Addison Capper reveal all…

1. Brick Bowl

Admittedly, I’m a bit Super Bowl’d out now. But you can’t not love this Lego recreation of some of the event’s biggest ads. The three-minute film doesn’t just mimic different spots shot-by-shot, but instead follows a football fan as he travels on an otherworldly journey, encountering Kim Kardashian, Danny Trejo, the Budweiser puppy and dinosaurs along the way. It was created by A+C Studios, who are based in the English seaside town of Margate and it took them just 36 hours to deliver the final video.

2. 50 Shades of Pleasure

With the anticipated release of the 50 Shades of Grey film just around the corner, everything seems to be all whips and chains, whips and chains right now. (Just ask viewers of British daytime TV show ‘This Morning’.) Trojan is jumping on that bandwagon, but not in a cringey porny weird kinda way. Instead the condom and lube brand is poking fun at one couple’s hapless attempts at 50 Shades-inspired bondage with this funny ad directed by Laura Murphy of MTV’s Girl Code. A ‘sex swing’ proves more work than its worth, faces are kicked and their revered ‘safety word’ is, let's say, questionable.

3. Doodle Tats

Memories of our kids’ childhoods are some of the most precious things we’ll ever own. And devoted dad, Keith Anderson, has devised a properly brilliant way to preserve them: he’s been having his son Kai’s doodles tattooed on his right arm. Apparently Kai even enjoys doodling on his father’s arm, as Anderson told Chance Faulkner, the photographer who took the below photos: “Recently, my son was there with me and he did some of the tattooing himself. He loves it.”

4. ADC Netherlands Annual

“You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover”: It’s one of the English language’s most common idioms. But never before has it such literal meaning than with this book cover from Thijs Biersteker of the Dutch digital company, Moore. The super smart book cover uses an integrated camera and facial recognition technology to only open when a reader’s expression is dead neutral. The creation came out of Biersteker’s fear of opinion overshadowing brilliance. “I often worry about my scepticism and judgement getting in the way of my amazement. Judgment should never hinder the relentless enthusiasm of seeing things for the first time,” he says on his website. At present, the prototype is being used to cover the Art Directors Club Netherlands annual.

5. Saved By The Bell Reunion

My childhood replicated itself this week as Jimmy Fallon got the old cast of Saved By The Bell back together. (Well, most of it anyway. Where were you Screech?) And it was pretty rad. Aside from a few broken voices and suspicious looking syrups, Zack et al. haven’t changed a bit.

BONUS. 6: Six Nations 2015 Game of Thrones-style Opener
