Meet the world’s largest production service dedicated to tabletop projects with a continuous hunger for evolution

Delivering highly creative food SFX and product content across TVC, digital, social and experiential, Polish production studio Bites boasts the world’s largest production potential dedicated to tabletop projects, specialising in unique film technique.

Counting the likes of McDonald’s, Nestlé and an array of Unilever brands - as well as global production houses from the EU, USA and Asia - as long-standing clients, Bites Studio works alongside production companies to produce everything from single shots all the way up to the most demanding of commercials. On top of this, Bites’ specialised photo studio, Milk’n’Honey offers top-notch food photography for projects that require extended production capabilities.

It’s the team’s focus on ultimate creativity paired with a drive for innovation and love of tech that makes Bites a unique offering in the world of tabletop content. Identifying the continuous need for advanced processes, Bites was built on cutting edge tech solutions from the very beginning.

Founder Jakub Laskus says, “Bites Studio was born out of passion and curiosity. The beginnings of the studio were related to food photography but we quickly moved to tabletop and video production too.”

“Our process was designed based on the analysis of dozens of tabletop projects,” he reveals, “where we optimised every activity in pre-production and on set. But what is most important is the constant overlapping and exchange of ideas between our creators and the SFX and tech teams.”

“We build and adapt bespoke rigs - there is much more space for testing and preparation in our process. There’s never one correct way of achieving a shot and we love to test all the paths before going to the client and trying to convince them that this is the right way. Sometimes we do tests even before writing a treatment. That gives us full control on the shoot day and absolutely unique visual effects.”

Jakub states that he is heavily guided by this level of development and innovation. “It fuels me. We are always searching and questioning, looking for solutions and redefining what’s possible. Our curiosity has led us to where we are today. ”

Alchemists, Engineers and Visual Artists

With a background in product, advertising, still life photography and designing brand retail chains, Jakub brings decades of experience to Bites.

Reflecting back on the founding of the studio, he comments, “Our first projects were made in a small garage with an area of 160m2. We had an SFX team of less than five people. Now, we have studio space of over 2300m2, a growing team and a selection of our own motion control robots. We have the strongest in-house team of tabletop technicians in Europe. The expertise of the team is focused around the design and implementation of in-camera special effects.”

“We build rigs and devices that allow us to control filming objects and liquids. We have three BOLT robotic arms, two of them on tracks. It gives us powerful production capabilities, as well as efficiency and flexibility.”

From robotics to electronics, pneumatics, liquids and chemistry - the team is divided into strict specialisations. “Each member of the SFX team knows how all processes work and is able to implement them, but they are qualified specialists in their field.”

“We worked 100 hours on the set, managing communication across 3 time zones (Europe, Asia and United States). We were shooting simultaneously on two units, the scenes with actors were filmed using two robot arms and we had 7 days of complex special effects!”

On top of this, Bites is constantly developing the team's competencies. “We continue to create new tools, systems and solutions that allow us to work more effectively. We are not only technicians and engineers, but also artists and creators. Our focus is on developing our visual art as well as our relationships with creators and agencies. This is why we established the CHPTR studio and Director’y.”

A non-commercial experimental studio, CHPTR aims to bring different people with different creative perspectives to one table to discuss issues and collaborate on projects. “We have long felt the need to create a place dedicated to the comprehensive implementation of creative ideas,” Jakub explains. “It’s part visual lab for all explorers out there, part meeting point for facilitating new possibilities, part in-house facility and, somehow, all of these combined.”

This ties in nicely with Director’y, which aims to develop relationships with creators and agencies alike. Bites classes it as the world's first food and tabletop director’s hub which currently holds over 120 directors from all over the world. “A project to moderate the tabletop environment and give more opportunities for creators to promote themselves.”

The two platforms have been built to enhance and amplify quality through sourcing the best creators and giving them the opportunities to develop the very best ideas and processes through experimental projects and sharing of insight.

Drawing from this rich pool of talent and ability, Bites is well placed to serve its clients with whatever it is they need. Through CHPTR and Director’y, Bites provides executive workshops, regular director showcases, concept development, consultancy and much much more. It’s what allows the studio to stay so flexible - something that is key in an ever-changing market.

Looking to the future, Jakub’s hunger for enhanced processes and development sees him in search of new and improved production models. “Finding new ways to organise teams to be able to deliver services more efficiently with changing needs / formats is important to me. Process development means being more effective.”
And this extends to their impact on the planet too. “We want to be an organisation that radically reduces the carbon footprint, implements the principles of common sense and moderation, encourages understanding and uses its resources and experience to support efficient projects promoting a greener way.”

Bites achieves this firstly by reducing its consumption of unprocessed materials, ensuring advanced waste segregation and reduced energy consumption on set and reducing water consumption. And secondly, through its production fund that allows the team to produce several spots a year promoting important international pro-ecological initiatives.

On his vision for the growth of his company, Jakub concludes, “I’d like to see Bites expand its physical studios worldwide with another hub in Europe to start with. My aim is for all of these moving parts to be tied together under our one brand and one impeccable process.”
