Celia discusses the importance of patience and resilience in the fast-paced digital ad industry and more

We’re back with another ‘Beyond the Desk by dentsu X’ feature, diving into the people, passions, and talents that make the agency so special. In this interview, we hear from Celia Boyd, Digital Media Supervisor, who shares insights about her career journey and experiences at dentsu X.

Celia discusses the importance of patience and resilience in the fast-paced digital ad industry, the evolution of her career since joining the company, and the valuable lessons she has learned along the way. Join us as we gain a deeper understanding of Celia's perspective and the unique contributions she brings to dentsu X.

Q> What is one skill they do not teach in school that you use every day?

Celia> Patience. I think working at a digital ad agency involves dealing with numerous moving pieces, different personalities, and various management styles, especially when collaborating across teams. On top of that, with the added complexity of  people working from home, balancing personal matters with work responsibilities and meetings, and having patience and grace with the people you work with is crucial. It's a skill that is not typically taught in school but is essential for success in this industry.

Q> How has your career evolved since you first joined dentsu X?

Celia> My career has changed quite a bit during my time at Dentsu X. Initially, my background and expertise were in social media. However, I didn't have experience working across different channels or a comprehensive understanding of the digital landscape. Over time, I transitioned to become a full funnel media planner for the team I am on now, working with multiple publishers across audio, OLED, display, and social. Dentsu X and the account team I am now on have exposed me to the broader digital ad world and provided me with valuable industry knowledge.

Q> What is something you wish you knew before entering the corporate/media world?

Celia> I would say I wish I had known to absorb everything, attend every training session, and listen as much as possible. There are numerous resources available in our industry that can shape one's career, and taking advantage of them is crucial. Additionally, people often tend to respond quickly instead of actively listening. I believe we can all learn a lot if we practice more attentive listening.

Q> Is there an early working experience or somebody you met that shaped/exposed you to your current career path?

Celia> Yes, when I started on the team, I was fairly new and inexperienced. However, that experience shaped me into the manager I am today. The bond built within the team is built on trust. Even though I joined the team during the pandemic and didn't meet most of my teammates in person, I still felt deeply connected to them. My direct manager has played a significant role in teaching me everything I know, and I credit her for my long-term commitment to Dentsu X.

Q> The Dentsu X experience is powered by ___.

Celia> Resilience. Resilience doesn't mean never feeling stressed or overwhelmed. It's about how you overcome challenges and learn from them. The strongest leaders I've worked with embody resilience and fearlessness in our industry.
