Director Brian Williams returned to his Irish roots with Dublin based agency Javelin to round off 2016 with an inspiring new spot for Toyota. The TV commercial showcases the concept-car looks of Toyota’s hybrid SUV, the C-HR or Coupe High Rider.
Williams was attracted by the client’s honest storytelling approach to the project. “They were insistent from the start that the story was king and would take priority over tons of juicy car shots. You often hear that kind of thing, but on this occasion they kept their word.”
The commercial shows Williams’s deftness of touch, drawing natural performances from the characters of father and young son, creating an evocative sense of place and allowing the actors to inhabit it in a way that is engaging and totally credible. “I could have done 50 seconds worth of material just on the son alone. If only he could drive! It’s great to be able to work with children again,” said Williams.
Working on location in Dublin and Donegal, Williams teamed up once again with DOP Callan Green to help bring the journey to life. Filming in script sequence, and treating the shoot as a road trip, A & B cameras were racing ahead leapfrogging each other to catch the car at the next stage of the journey. The result is a film rich in tone and atmosphere that captures an emotionally engaging journey through some of Ireland’s most beautifully rugged scenery.
“This fillum is the spirit and genuine intent of Toyota encapsulated in a 50” spot,” said Williams “and that is indeed rare.”
Brian Williams is repped in the UK, Europe and America by Bang TV.
