COMPULSORY’s Joe Nankin puts a relaxed spin on real life with an out of this world retro twist for the fashion brand
Luxury fashion brand, Band of Outsiders, have commissioned a different kind of fashion film for their FW19 collection. A continuation of their #JOINTHEBAND campaign, the new film, directed by COMPULSORY’s Joe Nankin combines youth culture and shifting consciousness, taking us back in time for a contemporary twist on the moon landing.

Set in the late 60s / early 70s, the film captures a snapshot of the lives of a group of young college students. The spot sees the friends prepare for the moon landing to be televised in an entrancingly intimate yet relaxed setting. The space mission lays the foundations for a metaphor of shifting consciousness – a feeling and moment of evolving from childhood to adolescence. Against a classic-contemporary backdrop, current garments from Band of Outsiders FW19 collection are artfully laced throughout the period narrative.

Director, Joe Nankin, says that beginning with a foundation of emotional truth was integral to creating an engaging film. He explains: “It was important that every styling and look had an underlying character with their own traits and journeys. This meant being detailed and particular about each character to ensure the garments were a natural part of the world.”

Joe embedded authenticity and specificity in his direction to pull off the believable period narrative. He says: “The late 60’s and early 70’s hold great weight in our collective cultural memory, so it’s easy to caricature if you’re not careful. I pushed all the departments to imagine our location as a real shared house for University students and to design with real life, rather than a retro aesthetic, in mind. That meant the interior wasn’t all brand-new Mid-Century decor. It had to be a little rough around the edges, bohemian, a hodgepodge of hand-me-downs and second-hand store finds. The key to the convincing 1970’s setting was thinking about it as is a fading 60s and 50s.”

The film’s original set design was key to Joe’s overarching visual and filmic vision. It was important that they seamlessly combined vintage and modern aesthetics to ensure the vibrant patterns of Band of Outsiders’ modern-day collection complemented the rich textures of the retro setting. Joe says: “The art department did an amazing job. It meant that I could focus on creating an authentic period context and let the clothes speak for themselves.”

Skilfully weaving the old with the new to tell a stylised but contemporary story, Joe and DOP Aaron Reid shot the film digitally.

Joe comments: “We really considered which format to shoot on. We wanted to avoid a purely period look and find an elevated style that evoked a sense of nostalgia and memory. We decided to shoot Arri Alexa in Anamorphic 2.39:1 which allowed us to hold ensemble the piece well plus be flexible enough to shoot in one day.”
