Greatcoat Films welcomes director and producer Georgina Cammalleri.
Over the last ten years, Georgina has directed and produced documentaries for Netflix, C4 and the BBC. Her first film as part of the Greatcoat roster is a folkloric, Wicker Man-inspired music video for Sports Team.
Cammalleri has made work exploring a huge range of subjects, from sporting scandals to true crime – including the BAFTA-winning Grierson-nominated documentary Gun No. 6. The film told the story of a single handgun which had been passed around as many as 11 different gunmen in six years, and its devastating impact on the community. The director is currently working on a new feature documentary about women in boxing.
As well as her work in the world of documentary, Georgina has made music videos for bands including Sports Team, Swim Deep and The Magic Gang - and earned herself a UKMVA nomination for ‘To Feel Good’. Her recent film for Sports Team’s Happy paid homage to 1973 horror film The Wicker Man, by delving into some of England’s darker folk rituals.
Story is key for Georgina and she frequently gravitates towards narrative-led concepts rooted in cinematic worlds. The director often blurs the boundaries between drama and documentary to create surreal twists and enjoys working closely with artists to get the best performance – one that is authentic, credible, and shows a different side of them.
“Georgina has that enduring curiosity of great documentary filmmakers, which allows her to make a sincere connection with the subjects of her films – whether they’re entangled in real-life dramas or the artists and musicians she works with in music videos,” says Greatcoat founder Simon Oxley.
“Georgina’s directing approach brings a very different style to the Greatcoat roster, both in terms of tone and structure,” adds head of production Sandra Spethmann. “Her music videos live in cinema-inspired worlds that take delight in being free of the shackles of real life.”
