Ogilvy South Africa is getting finger lickin’ real in its new campaign for KFC. Repositioning the fast food brand to emphasise the real ingredients that are hand breaded in store, the spot pokes fun at the fakery of advertising.
Implausibly cool hipster ‘influencers’, saccharinely cosy families, slick players – the campaign leaves no hackneyed ad trope un-poked. Playing on the desperation that leads brands to make overblown and unwarranted claims of ‘epic-ness’, the spot ends on a delightfully silly hot air balloon show, where the balloons are actually chicken drumsticks. In the end, the spot asks, isn’t it better to just be honest rather than to rely on hype and embellishments?
The campaign was created by Ogilvy and directed by Trevor Clarence of production company Your Girlfriend.
