In motorsports, almost all athletes are dependent on external sponsors to pursue a career in racing. Female drivers especially, find necessary funding to compete a difficult task. Leveraging Web 3.0, the LMG GT No. 1 project looks to change that.
Creative Agency Amsterdam Berlin and German racer Laura-Marie Geissler are setting out to launch the first NFT-funded racing team. No more bowing to sponsors, no more being forced to look pretty for the cameras – just pure, self empowered, female racing courtesy of proceeds from NFT sales used to fund the 2022 season.
“I want to be seen for my driving, to be measured strictly by my performance,” says Laura-Marie Geissler. “Not by my private life, my looks or the sponsors that I find or don't find.”
The LMG GT No.1 design is based on the livery of a Le Mans race legend, the 'Pink Pig'. However, instead of the butcher map, Geissler’s race car bares the marks beauty surgeons use for their operations, representing the pressure put on the physical appearance of female drivers. The design is a powerful statement against the objectification of women in motorsports and for gender equality in the racing world.
"This project attempts to rethink the way sport sponsoring works,” says Moritz Grub, co-founder of Amsterdam Berlin GmbH. “It uses the NFT technology to enable a new decentralised sponsoring model that creates a levelled playing field for the athletes, independent of gender, race or social status.”
The unique NFT set includes a 360° render of the livery, a high-res top shot of the design, the buyers name on Laura-Marie’s real LMG GT No.1 race car and her signed Arai GP-6 helmet, which will be shipped to the winning bidder after the auction.
"Using the power of the blockchain, Unblocked is super excited to partner with Laura-Marie Geissler to bring fans closer to the action than ever before - while amplifying some of its most underrepresented voices,” says Harrison Wang, co-founder of Unblocked.
Besides the car design itself, there will be a series of 1001 helmets and 100 digital race suits that come in different variations and rarities. These Items can be bought at a fixed price. All NFTs will be available exclusively through lmggtno1.com, launching at 12pm EST on the 22nd of March 2022. A capsule collection consisting of two longsleeve T-shirt designs will be available in the coming weeks, prior to Laura-Marie’s first race.
