AKKURAT Studios announces the addition of award-winning Amsterdam-based director Emma Branderhorst to its roster for exclusive German representation.
Known for her cinematic storytelling with a keen focus on social themes from a female perspective, Emma’s unique approach has resonated with audiences worldwide. Her work transforms heavy topics—such as period poverty, war, and societal shaming—into deeply personal, slice-of-life narratives that are both authentic and impactful.
Emma, now 28, began her career in a small Dutch town as an actress before transitioning to directing after studying at the Art Academy in Utrecht. Her debut short film, Under the Skin (2021), premiered to critical acclaim at Berlinale Generation, establishing her as a compelling new voice in contemporary cinema. Her subsequent short, Spotless (2022), won multiple international awards, including the prestigious Crystal Bear at Berlinale, and even qualified for the 2023 Oscars. Her latest short, Ma Mère et Moi (2023), continued her festival success, further cementing her reputation for powerful, female-centred storytelling.
“Emma’s work speaks volumes to our mission at AKKURAT: to showcase boundary-pushing, socially engaged storytellers,” said Rocco Kopecny. “Her ability to transform challenging themes into authentic, heartfelt narratives is precisely what we aim to bring to German audiences.”
In addition to her acclaimed shorts, Emma has made significant strides in commercial film, most notably with Piece of Me, which won the Grand Prix and multiple Silver Lions at Cannes Lions 2024. Her foray into feature filmmaking is highly anticipated, as she develops a new film exploring the complex emotions surrounding friendship and grief.
