AI as an Ocean: Will You Sink or Swim?

Stan Lim, chief creative and experience officer at Dentsu Creative Singapore imagines AI as an ocean of new tools that is rapidly expanding with no end in sight

Imagine AI as an ocean of new tools, and it is rapidly expanding with no end in sight.

On this ocean, AI won’t replace you. Your unwillingness to use it will.

AI will replace the weak and reward the strong. Only the most skilled and bold creatives can thrive.

You are missing out on the shore

Not using AI is like standing on the shore while others dive into an unexplored ocean.

Some people are sceptical or curious, but too hesitant to jump in. When we hear fears about AI disrupting creatives, it is usually about those who refuse to engage with it.

However, AI actually saves time and lowers the skill barrier for high-level creative work. Avoiding AI would be like racing with a canoe while everyone else is equipped with powerboats.

Our teams have tripled their creative output, and we are delivering higher quality results faster than ever since adopting AI, but it is not just about speed. It is about how much more you can explore and achieve with the time that is freed up.

In today’s fast-paced world, ignoring AI does not just slow you down - it can take you out of the race entirely.

Most people will end up in the shallows

Most people using AI will stay in the shallows.

It is great for beginners as they stick to the basics of using simple tools and best-practice prompts. While skills like drawing, composing, or animating used to be hard to master, now it just takes seconds.

But staying in the shallows comes with a problem - everyone else will end up there too. As AI thrives on understanding and recognising patterns, the simpler one’s inputs, the more generic the results will be. If your work looks like everyone else’s, why would anyone pay for it?

Basic AI users are heading for a race to the bottom, stuck in a crowded, commoditised market. AI is only as powerful as the creative mind using it. To truly stand out, we must push beyond the basics.

The bold ones dive into the deep

These are the advanced users, the innovators. They see AI as more than a tool - it’s an extension of their imagination. They push boundaries, experiment constantly, and use AI to bring their unique vision to life.

In a world where AI feels limitless, they are usually never satisfied, always finding new ways to combine or tweak tools to achieve the impossible. For them, AI is a multiplier - it doesn’t replace creativity; it amplifies it. They grow and adapt as fast as the tools evolve.

These are the creatives who will match the exponential growth of AI, leaving everyone else behind.

The widening skill gap

So, what’s the big takeaway?

Imagine spending a year standing on the shores while others are exploring the deep. Now, multiply that by 10 years.

AI is going to dramatically widen the skill gap between creatives like never before. It is not a shortcut or a replacement for talent - it is a creative amplifier. It will separate the excellent from the mediocre. If you are not using AI, you risk being left behind completely. If you are only dabbling in it, you will struggle to stand out. On the other hand, if you embrace it fully and push its limits, the possibilities are endless.

This is not about fear or hype - it is about understanding where you stand and how far you are willing to go.

Are you staying on the beach, paddling in the shallows, or diving into the deep?

Because the ocean is not waiting for anyone.
