76 Ltd has teamed up with DLKW Lowe to create a fantastical alternate world to promote two new attractions opening at Alton Towers Resort on March 24th.
Opening on the same Alton Towers street, the two TV ads take very different directions to promote the family friendly Ice Age The 4D Experience and the terrifying addition to the Nemesis story: Nemesis Sub-Terra.
The colourful 20” ad for Ice Age The 4D Experience shows a family excitedly getting into a bright yellow car (running on bubbles, not petrol) when suddenly and surprisingly the car fills up with snow, exploding out of the backseat screens where the kids are watching Ice Age.
The 30” ad for Nemesis Sub-Terra is based in the same world but with a darker hue; a creepy underside to the sunny exterior. A pair of twin girls with pigtails play marbles and hum the well known Alton Towers Resort theme, Hall of the Mountain King, as a crow circles. As one of their marbles rolls down a drain it reveals a giant alien egg and a scary system of caverns below, as a whispering voice invites the viewer to experience 'your worst nightmare, underground'.
The ads were devised by DLKW Lowe and directed by Gerald McMorrow for 76 Ltd. McMorrow was director of the 2009 feature length film Franklyn, starring Eva Green, Sam Riley and Ryan Phillippe. Post production was carried out by Dave Smith at Absolute London.
Both full length ads will run for six months on UK TV as well as 10” versions. A 15” version of the Ice Age The 4D Experience ad will also run on Italian TV.
Gerald McMorrow, director for 76 Ltd says: “It's always an exciting task to create new worlds and the parallel world of Alton Towers Resort that we just shot for DKLW Lowe was a lot of fun and an aesthetically challenging brief. While remaining somewhere between the real and the imaginary, the spots are variations on a theme, one that I think could run and run. The idea that there are many different entrances into many different worlds within worlds in the Theme Park was an intriguing one - some are scary, some are magical, some are just plain silly. I have always been a fan of matte paintings and old fashioned filming methods and it was a great chance to work with a combination of model making, interchangeable sets and on set practical effects.”
